Overtime event planned for students in New Lothrop
By GARY GOULD Argus-Press Staff Writer

Monday, September 10, 2007 9:52 AM EDT
NEW LOTHROP - A visit by Miss Michigan 2007 and a game of paintball will be the highlights of a post-home football game event for teenagers Friday night.

Overtime is a post-football game event held in the community for the fifth year after every home football and basketball game, according to Andrew Brashaw, organizer of the event and student minister for New Lothrop Church of the Nazarene.

While this will be the third Overtime event this season, it is the first to feature a prominent guest such as Kirsten Haglund, the 2007 Miss Michigan, and an outdoor paintball field.

“We do Overtime four to six times a year for both the football and basketball games,” Brashaw said. “It's for seventh-through-12th grade area students from any school...not just New Lothrop.”

Hosted by the New Lothrop Community Center, located at 7406 S. Saginaw St., Overtime kicks off at 9 p.m. and ends at midnight. For a $2 admission, students can take part in open gym, pool, video games and more.
Haglund will hold a question-and-answer session with students and will be available for autograph and photograph opportunities.

The outdoor paintball field is owned and operated by Mad Frog Paintball, a professional company that specializes in paint-ball field rentals. All paintball equipment will be supplied by the company.

This year is the first time paintball has been held at Overtime, Brashaw said.

“We've had great response,” he said. “We had about 110 kids filter through the last time and play paintball.”

He said Haglund will also speak to the children with a brief presentation before making herself available for autographs.

Haglund, who won the crown June 16, is the granddaughter of the 1944 titleholder, Iora Hunt. Haglund, 18, advanced to the state pageant and won after winning Miss Oakland County.
She is taking a break from her studies at the University of Cincinnati's Conservatory of Music to serve as Miss Michigan for the year and compete at the 2008 Miss America Pageant.

Students must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian in order to play paintball. Waivers may be obtained at www.nlnaz.com. A $5 fee is required to play paintball. For questions call or e-mail

One more post-football game Overtime will be held after this, Oct. 5. Further events will take place during basketball season.

Bourbonnais festival offers paintball this year

Pop. Pop. Pop.   Shooters laughed with each splat of paint that landed on the giant pink pig bouncing around yellow and orange inflatable bunkers.   After the round of target practice finished, 15-year-old Will Servo emerged, sweating, from the pig suit. It had been his first venture into the wide-eyed pink creature in his three years of working with Mad Frog Paintball.   "It was really fun," he said.   For the first time in its 32-year history, the Bourbonnais Friendship Festival is offering the opportunity for friends, family and co-workers to pelt each other with small balls of paint. Mad Frog Paintball, of Eastpointe, Mich., has brought its arena to the festival.   Players have a couple of options: There is the standard game, where the players are divided into two teams and must tag everyone on the other team. Once hit with a paint pellet, the player is out. The paintballers can also play a Last Man Standing format, where the person who gets through the game without getting hit is the winner. Younger participants who do not wish to get hit can play Paint the Pig, which involves shooting at one of the large pig costumes worn by the Mad Frog employees.   Mad Frog is owned by William and Shelly Crook and their children, Justin and Keara. Some of Justin's friends also work at Mad Frog -- a few get paid in paintball equipment.   "It's really nice because it's family," Shelly said. "It really doesn't get any better than this."   The company provides paintball guns, pellets, face masks and neck protectors to each individual who comes to play. There are also chest protectors available to wear. The paintballers must view a safety video before suiting up, and the main safety points are reviewed before the players are sent into the arena. Colin Heimberger and Dylan Saltzgiver both came out of the paintball arena with orange paint splattered across their masks. Some orange had made its way into Dylan's blond hair, and both boys were smiling. Colin had played before, but Dylan had not.   "It just looked like so much fun, so I wanted to play it and actually try it," he said.   Will said that although it is mostly guys who prefer to play paintball, they do have girls come to play as well.   "You get that one girl every now and again who's like, 'I'll play, sure!'" he said.   "Then she tears everyone up," added Neil Hallett, another Mad Frog employee

Review:These guys have an awesome concept here! It looks like they really have got their act together. Where else can you have a paintball field in your backyard, unless you own a paintball field?  I've been a paintballer for over 4 years now, and I've traveled over an hour each way to get to the field I frequent the most (EMR Paintball www.emrpaintball.com ). The money saved on gas, the time saved on travel, and the hassle saved on organizing your friends at a location they may have never been to before are well worth the money paid to have these guys setup at your house. . .believe me!  Another thing; additional paint is only $45 per case! That's cheap! My paintball friends and I go through at least a case of paint each on one trip; and there's roughly 25 of us per trip. Most fields I'm familiar with charge $80+ per case (you do the math)! You're obviously not going to get the same affect playing this in your backyard as you will playing at a regular paintball field, but imagine all the attention you'll get from the neighbors! I think these guys got a great thing going for them, and their family owned! Lots of luck! I give you a 9 out of 10!

Review:Mad Frog Paintball and their portable paintball field came to an event the last week of September. They arrived early and had everything set up in time for the event. They stayed until the very last minute of the event.  This review is easy: How can I find any negative with a company that brings an entire community's attention to an event? There were no delays or flaws in shuttling players in and out of games; they had plenty of staff, and the refs were great.  The event started at 8pm and ended at midnight...Mad Frog finally left the campus at 1:30am. They were full of energy and completely positive the entire time.  I recommend them to anyone that wants to make their event or party the best around.  I am already planning next year's event with Mad Frog Paintball.  Thanks Mad Frog!

Review:
Ok they brought out a regulation 3-man field (we played 5 on 5 no problem) to my yard for a resonable price, really it was i had like 30 people at the party 20 or so played (some only once sorry grandpa) and it was one flat price for up to 3 cases of paint for 4 hours  we used 5 cases & it only cost us $45per case for the extra paint these guys & girl came out & made sure we had safe fun, it was the best b-day party i ever had  my mom even played 2 games & lit dad up on one now i know not everyone has the room but these guys said they can set it up anywere, like in a park or even inside. they even clean up they are good people so check it out if you want your own private field for any type of party it made my party into one awsome event, my friend booked them for his party & i cant wait till then
